Coffee, Candy, and Connection: A Ritual Passed Down

Some things in life are more than just habits; they are memories wrapped in daily rituals, infused with love and nostalgia. My morning coffee is one of those rituals, a connection to my past, my heritage, and the woman who helped shape me—my grandmother Josefa. I called her abuelita. She is a big influence on why and how I create.

Growing up in Mexico, my grandmother would start the day with a warm cup of coffee and a piece of bread. It wasn’t just about the caffeine or the breakfast itself—it was a moment of togetherness, of quiet appreciation for the morning, and of tradition. I can still picture her hands, carefully preparing my small cup, letting me share in this simple but sacred routine. From that time on, coffee became more than just a drink; it became a part of me.

Today, I still cherish my morning coffee, not just for its rich, comforting taste but for what it represents—a pause, a reflection, a warm memory of my grandmother’s love. It’s not about addiction or necessity; it’s about connection.

Another small but meaningful detail from my grandmother’s life was her love of hard candy. She always had a piece and would share one with me. It was something that seemed so simple, yet it brought her joy. Now, I find myself carrying on that tradition as well, always having some hard candy nearby, relishing the sweetness and the memories it holds.

These little details, these small rituals, are the things I love to pass down to my own family. A warm cup of coffee, a piece of candy—tiny yet significant imprints of love and tradition. Life is made up of these moments, and I hope they stay with my loved ones the way they have stayed with me.
